Angkor Wat

Last weekend was once again spent at Angkor. We visited a carved riverbed called Kbal Spean with absolutely no Japanese tourists present. That was a nice experience.
In the afternoon we went to the world’s largest jigsaw puzzle, the Baphoun. In its heyday, it must have been one of the most spectacular of Angkor’s temples and was build around 1049.
It is a complete ruin and was the centre of restoration efforts when the Cambodian civil war erupted when worked was paused for a century. The temple was taken apart piece by piece, every piece was numbered and recorded. During the Khmer Rouge years all the records were destroyed leaving experts with the largest jigsaw puzzle. The stones of the temple cover kilometers and kilometers of land and there is really no hope that the temple can be put together again in the near future.
We enjoyed the sunset at Angkor Wat, talking to monks and chatting to street children trying to sell us books and postcards.
