Tomorrow is a national holiday in Cambodia, the World Women’s Day. While Cambodian women do not often work for the public administration or in office jobs, they are most certainly better business people than man. On markets and in shops you will find them to be very hard bargainers equipped with an excellent sense for making money. However, Cambodian men are facing a lot of set backs by the advance of women’s rights. As I found out today, a new law has just been passed that will send husbands to jail for cheating on their wives. Also, tradition has it, and Cambodia is really pretty backwards when it comes to modern lifestyles, that young Cambodians should not have sexual intercourse prior to their marriage which reduces the number of your actual sexual partners to just one in a lifetime. Great stuff! Tradition also has it, that women can ask their boyfriends/husbands etc to do anything they want to on World Women’s Day, even take a severe beating, and I have made an agreement with my male co-workers, that female colleagues can do so as well.
