The ultimate adventure this side of South Africa is the Mphongolo Backpacking Trail in Kruger Park, and we are doing it. We are currently at Mopani Rest Camp in Kruger Park watching Venus and Jupiter align and preparing for tomorrow. The trail is a 4 day, over night, bring your own accommodation and food type trail through a very remote corner of Kruger National Park. It is 42km long and leads through absolute wilderness where few people apart from park rangers have ever ventured. We will be among the Big Five on foot with two armed guards, our tents and all our food for the upcoming days.
Unfortunately, we are about to discover that we let the fly sheet for one of the tents at home. Oops! Double oops for it is pouring down outside and getting flooded while camping in the middle of nowhere is most certainly not my idea of fun.
Luckily we have connections and remembered that we have them. A quick phone call to the friend of a friend later who is a section ranger in Kruger and we have a borrowed tent organized which we are to pick up somewhere on the trail.
First challenge successfully overcome.
